Capital gain when shares are sold at a higher price

Paper I QI.1: Capital gain when shares are sold at a higher price

Answer: Rs. 15000

💡 What it's asking: A capital gain is the extra money you make because the share price went up. Find the rise for one share, then multiply by the number of shares.

  1. 1Rise in price for one share = 30 − 25 = Rs. 5.
  2. 2There are 3000 shares, so the capital gain = 3000 × 5.
  3. 3Capital gain = Rs. 15 000.

✅ Bought for 3000 × 25 = 75 000 and sold for 3000 × 30 = 90 000; the difference is 15 000.

Annual dividend income in terms of share price x

Paper I QI.2: Annual dividend income in terms of share price x

Answer: Rs. 400000/x

💡 What it's asking: The share price is an unknown x, so the answer will be an expression with x in it. First count the shares, then multiply by the dividend per share.

  1. 1Number of shares = money invested ÷ price of one share = 80 000/x.
  2. 2Each share pays a dividend (yearly payment) of Rs. 5.
  3. 3Dividend income = 5 × 80 000/x = Rs. 400 000/x.

✅ Try x = 40: you get 2000 shares and 2000 × 5 = 10 000, and 400 000/40 is also 10 000.
