Value of an imported item after adding customs duty

Rs. 70 000
💡 What it's asking: Customs duty is a tax added on top of the item's value. Find 40% of Rs. 50 000 and add it to the value.
- Write 40% as a fraction: 40/100.
- Find the duty: 50 000 × 40/100 = Rs. 20 000.
- Add the duty to the original value: 50 000 + 20 000 = Rs. 70 000.
✅ Adding 40% is the same as multiplying by 1.4, and 50 000 × 1.4 = 70 000.

Subtract two algebraic fractions with unlike denominators

1/(8x)
💡 What it's asking: You can only subtract fractions when their bottoms (denominators) are the same. So first make both denominators 8x.
- The smallest expression both 8x and 4x divide into is 8x (the LCM, least common multiple).
- Change 1/(4x): multiply top and bottom by 2 to get 2/(8x).
- Now subtract the tops: 3/(8x) − 2/(8x) = 1/(8x).
✅ Try x = 1: 3/8 − 1/4 = 3/8 − 2/8 = 1/8, which matches 1/(8x).
