Fractions

Subtract two mixed numbers

Paper I Part A Q1: Subtract two mixed numbers

Answer: 1 1/6

💡 What it's asking: Turn the mixed numbers into improper (top-heavy) fractions, give them the same denominator, then subtract.

  1. 12⅓ = 7/3 and 1⅙ = 7/6.
  2. 2Common denominator 6: 7/3 = 14/6.
  3. 314/6 − 7/6 = 7/6 = 1⅙.

✅ 2⅓ − 1⅙ is a bit more than 2 − 1 = 1, and 1⅙ fits.

Liquid Measurements

Order liquid volumes given in litres and millilitres

Paper I Part A Q2: Order liquid volumes given in litres and millilitres

Answer: 0.025 l, 0.25 l, 402 ml

💡 What it's asking: To compare volumes, change them all to the same unit (millilitres), then put them in order from smallest to largest.

  1. 11 l = 1,000 ml, so 0.025 l = 25 ml.
  2. 2The printed '025 l' is missing its decimal point; read it as 0.25 l = 250 ml.
  3. 3402 ml is already in millilitres.
  4. 4Order: 25 ml, 250 ml, 402 ml, so 0.025 l, 0.25 l, 402 ml.

✅ 0.025 l is a tiny amount (a spoonful), 0.25 l is a cup, and 402 ml is a bit more, so the order makes sense. (If '025 l' meant 25 l, it would go last.)

  4. පිළිවෙළ: 25 ml, 250 ml, 402 ml, එනම් 0.025 l, 0.25 l, 402 ml.
