GraphsGraph of x^2 - 2x - 2; axis, negative range, estimate root 3

පිළිතුර: i -3 iii x = 1 iv -0.7 < x < 2.7 v root 2.7, so root 3 about 1.7
Working in English
We draw the graph of y = x² − 2x − 2 and then read answers off it. The lowest point, where it crosses the x-axis, and where it is below the axis tell us everything.
- (i) Put x = 1 into the function: y = 1 − 2 − 2 = −3.
- (ii) Plot every (x, y) pair from the table with the given scale and join them with one smooth U-shaped curve. Its lowest point (minimum) is (1, −3).
- (iii) The axis of symmetry is the vertical line through the minimum point, so it is x = 1.
- (iv) 'Negative' means y < 0, so the curve is below the x-axis. That happens between the two crossing points: about −0.7 < x < 2.7.
- (v) The positive root (where the curve cuts the x-axis on the right) is about 2.7. Completing the square gives (x − 1)² = 3, so that root is exactly 1 + √3.
- (v) So 1 + √3 ≈ 2.7, which gives √3 ≈ 1.7.
